“The Circle of Frost” – A Ghost Story written collaboratively by Bookstagrammers!

I posted an idea that we could write a short story in the comments of one of my posts – and it worked out quite well! Thank you to those who participated, I had great fun doing this!)

I often forget I'm a university student, when I'm I often forget I'm a university student, when I'm focused on creative projects and tasks and home life and the madness of current events and visiting friends and appreciating each day as it passes.

Usually I feel disconnected from the university world, as if carrying out moments of an English student's life, but really I'm somewhere two years on looking back, and remembering an echo of myself who used to walk those halls and smile at the black-and-white faces of past writers on the wall.

Some days, though, I'll discuss a fascinating book passage with peers, write ideas for an essay on the train, or visit a bookshop with friends and feel the energy of the city bursting at the seams with knowledge and colour and inspiration.

Today I ate chips at a pub and chatted with a group from class, before sketching at a gallery with a new friend. We discussed art and literature and what reality means, and I revisited my favourite painting.
Suddenly I remember I'm a student again, and to enjoy the moment from right here, looking up.

Were/are you a student? What subject? Did/do you enjoy it?
It's Doctor Who Day! Swipe to see photos from my D It's Doctor Who Day! Swipe to see photos from my Doctor Who party when I was 13๐Ÿค“ I was watching Matt Smith's episodes, and we themed the food and decor around references from the show! Then fish fingers and custard this evening, as per tradition.

The 50th Anniversary special 'Day of the Doctor' was the first episode I watched, when it aired, and I still remember the awe I felt at the adventure unfolding before me. I just rewatched it with my friend Alysha, and love it even more! I've realised how much of an influence it is on my writing and how I think. Now, 10 years on, David Tennant is back again for the 60th anniversary special(s!) this weekend. My 11 year old self is so happy!!

Any other Whovians out there just excited as I am?๐Ÿคฉ
Where have words taken you this week? Perhaps a wo Where have words taken you this week? Perhaps a world in a book you're reading, or one you're writing... Do tell me about it, so I can go there too!๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Isn't it amazing how reading and writing can transport our minds to a whole different place (and what we could call a different plane, as it exists in our minds)? I started walking across a bridge in London yesterday, and cold wind whipped at my cheeks and neck; I braced against it and saw the long pavement stretching ahead of me. Then I thought through ideas for my story, and realised I'd reached the other side, entirely forgetting the cold. My mind had been so immersed in the scenes that it usurped my reality. So imagination has its dangers too... but it is a power that can whisk us away from our surroundings, or enhance them.

Vice versa, our surroundings can inform our imagination and generate ideas - the line in this post is from an early scene where Zoe goes exploring to inspire her story.
The setting my characters have been spending time in this week is an imposing tower with tinted windows and silent corridors...

If you've been writing this month (for NaNoWriMo or otherwise), I'd love to hear about a world or setting you've created. What's it like there? Take me with youโœจ
This is sort of a trick question...๐Ÿ˜„๐ŸŽฉ Of cou This is sort of a trick question...๐Ÿ˜„๐ŸŽฉ Of course you're welcome to choose one aesthetic as the most 'you', but these are all for one person: my story's main character, Zoe!

She takes on many different roles throughout the story, as she discovers more of who she is, or perhaps who she didn't realise she could be. We all have different versions of ourselves depending on the day, our environment, and throughout our lives, and it's a topic I find fascinating to explore in my writing.

I think perhaps I am most drawn to 'The Observer' this evening, as I watch the fields pass by the train window.

Which do you resonate most with today?โœจ๐Ÿ“š
Why are we here? It's perhaps one of the oldest, Why are we here?

It's perhaps one of the oldest, most-asked questions. Isn't it interesting how it can be asked with inspired curiosity, or dejected apathy?

As humans, we look for purpose. A friend of mine says we give our own lives meaning. Another says we find it along the way. I think meaning is all around us, and we can craft it how we choose.

Sometimes meaning can dwindle and warp. I often question why I take photos, why I write, or why (how!) any of all this exists in the first place. It can be easy to forget the point of it all... but then I sit beside my sister for a while, I appreciate the flavour of salty soup on a spoon, the warmth of orange light in the living room and my parents' laughter, and the well-wishes in a friend's voice message... and I remember.

(๐Ÿ“ธPhoto of my sister and me taken by my dad, a couple of years ago)

Where do you find purpose and meaning?
My journal entry from a day in the Upside Down... My journal entry from a day in the Upside Down...

This was a fun trip from last October with my fellow time-travellers Kaby & Rory - we went to 1986, got experimented on in a laboratory, then ran from Demogorgons through the Upside Down, before escaping and relaxing at the bar.
As it's apparently Stranger Things day, I thought I'd shareโœจ

Would you choose the cinnamon roll or the cookie dough ice-cream?
Time is fragile and moments are precious. What is Time is fragile and moments are precious. What is a moment you hold close?

This was a beautiful moment captured by @ellelorean.co during the August retreat hosted by @meg.lara.atelier. We walked to the top of the hill and admired the magnificent Yorkshire view, as the sun began to set. Our shadows played on the golden rocks, and we forgot we were cold.

While Elle and @elainadaleybookcovers took photos, Meg, @sophiaalessandrataylor, @ilziliana, my sister & I let our hair free in the wind, and ran (or jauntily hopped) over the moorland towards the sunset. Hand in hand, we laughed, our skirts billowing behind us.

I hold this moment close๐ŸŒ„

Tell me about a moment that is precious to you. It could be recent, or one from the archives๐Ÿค—

I reread it until I understood, then something clicked for 8-year-old me, and I thought... "Yes, I get it. I get those thoughts." The ones that creep up and decide you know something before you know that you know it. The gut feeling you can't shake. The background thought-processes we try to write down before they escape us like a dream.

Do you consider yourself a deep thinker, or do you seek simplicity?

(And are depth and simplicity opposed, or is deep thinking merely the endless search for a simple answer...?)
All was quiet in Miss Peregrine's Home, as the chi All was quiet in Miss Peregrine's Home, as the children watched the Hunter's Moon through the conservatory windows, and Samhain eve cloaked the land in a veil of stirring spirits. Time stood still, and they held their blankets close, steam curling from their teacups as the light-show of projected dreams began to glow upon the wall.

(A little scene I imagined, inspired by Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children - one of my favourite movies to watch this time of year)

They say the veil between worlds is thinnest this night. How are you spending it?

For me it's a cosy-spooky night in - I watched The Nightmare Before Christmas this afternoon and painted my nails, then watched BBC Ghosts while decorating the lounge with old Halloween decorations. My sister and I had coffee, and I'm now on an evening call with @b.solis_ ๐Ÿง™โ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿง™

I also took video footage that I've nearly finished editing, including the whole of Breaking Free that everyone sang and danced to and formed a conga line for๐Ÿ˜‚

They may not have played our AC/DC request but at least there was Saturday Night and the Cha Cha Slide๐Ÿ˜† It was as memorable as the previous evening and I was glad to have got the opportunity to live it again.

I've always been fascinated by the 'mad woman in t I've always been fascinated by the 'mad woman in the attic' trope. What is the unhinged creature so whispered about and locked away amongst the cobwebs? Who was she before they stopped calling her by a name?

Was Bertha Mason in Jane Eyre a creepy ghoul, or a misunderstood woman wronged by society? I lean towards the latter.

I'm enjoying playing with this trope for my book... and I shall say no more๐Ÿ˜‚

(P.S. Who am I, posting two days in a row AND with a reel that was just filmed today? My Instagram will probably be confused for a while...)

๐ŸŽฉ Would you rather live in an upstairs attic, or an underground bunker?๐Ÿ‘€
This weekend I had the joy of attending the Hunter This weekend I had the joy of attending the Hunter's Moon Ball in Oxford, and I wanted to share the magic of the experience with you!โœจ

As a last-minute bonus, I was asked to take photos on both nights, which was wonderful as I got to see everyone's gorgeous outfits and capture moments of laughter and beauty while experiencing them too. Dan and Sam from @icmg.productions were so supportive and encouraging, welcoming me as an equal while they trusted me to take the entrance photos, even though I hadn't done that kind of thing before (thanks for your confidence in me guys!)
I also captured some video which I'm currently editing๐ŸŽฅ

This first night, I got to meet lovely people I've known on here for a long time, and many new faces - especially in the photo line. There was a great energy of people hyping each other's outfits, applauding their friends, and laughing even as they waited for their turn to pose. The whole atmosphere was magical; like stepping into a world of Bookstagrammers, readers, creators, artists and dreamers in real life.

Here are some photos from the first night, which I went to with two friends and my sister. It was so much fun! I'll share about the second night in another postโœจ

Thank you Abby @gauntletsandgownsevents for welcoming me so warmly into this wonderful space you've created, and for two marvellous, memorable eveningsโค๏ธ Here's to the next!

(P.S. I'm trying out this new scrapbook format, so let me know what you think! I know it looks smaller on phone screens so I might make future ones less crowded so you can read them better.)

  • It's spooky season, so here's some decor in my room that perhaps looks a little haunted๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ

Thank you for voting in my stories poll yesterday about whether to do some immersive adventure reels - safe to say that option was popular! I'm excited to make them๐Ÿคฉ

Over the weekend I finished giving feedback for two awesome beta-reads by 2 of my favourite writers, @lina_amarego_writes and @l.e._reiner_author, then read 'Good Behaviour' by Molly Keane for my Irish literature university module.

I've also been writing a few lines here and there for my book... stay tuned for more on that!

If you had to choose autumn decor, would it be...?

-spooky
-cosy
-spooky-cosy

(I'd choose the third option of course๐Ÿ‚)
  • I haven't seen Gilmore Girls(๐Ÿ˜ฎ๐Ÿ™‰) but the cosiness of this sound reminds me of One Tree Hill which was in the same era. I watched it in my teen years and now I'm rewatching it with my Mum - she's already invested in the story!๐Ÿ˜„ It has those cosy Autumn vibes so I thought I'd try and capture them in this reel๐Ÿ‚

โ€ข
I think this sound made me think of One Tree Hill because the voice (which I believe is Lorelai's, played by Lauren Graham, right?) reminds me of Karen, Lucas' mum - whose actress Moira Kelly, fun fact, also voiced Nala in The Lion King!

Screenshot to capture a cosy autumn activity, and tell me in a comment which one you got!โ˜•๐Ÿ‚
  • Hello Enchanted Folk! I've been squirreled away in my creative attic working at some posts I'm very excited to share, but in the meantime here's a little *filler episode* of some autumn vibes๐Ÿ‚

Some autumnal highlights from this past week:

โ€ขLast Tuesday my Mum, sister and I went shopping for Halloween things (a little tradition we do every year now)๐ŸŽƒ
โ€ขI made this pumpkin pie on Wednesday, while listening to the Once Upon A Time musical episode songs amidst the smell of cinnamonโ˜•
โ€ขOn Thursday, I stood in the rain beneath flashes of lightning and rumbles of thunder as I queued for Ben Barnes' first UK concert (which was amazing! I'll do another post about it)โ˜”
โ€ขYesterday, I read The Country Girls by Edna O'Brien for university while drinking cinder toffee coffee (say that 5 times fast...). I had my first seminar of 3rd year today and really enjoyed it.

How has your week been? If it's autumn for you too, is your house filled with decorations and pumpkin spices yet? What things have you been doing to embrace the season? ๐ŸŽƒ๐Ÿ‚๐Ÿฅง
  • What makes you feel inspired, uplifted and thrilled?๐ŸŒณ

A few posts ago, I asked about daily comforts and what makes you feel cosy. Now I'm intrigued to know what you are passionate about; what fills you with a sense of adventure and wonder.

For me, it's the feeling of sudden inspiration when I think of an idea for an art piece, or a story. It's the vastness of the moors when I've wandered across the land where my favourite writers from the past once walked. It's the awe-inspiring beauty of a pink sky, or a full moon, when I glance out the window and realise it is there.

It's the sense of determination I get to improve my skills, to create something new, or to embark on adventures into unexplored territory.

As Anne Shirley would say, what gives you a thrill?โœจ
  • You're at a cafรฉ, it's calm and quiet, and a cup of your favourite drink is beside youโ˜•

What else is on the table?

Perhaps it's a book to read, a notebook to write in, or a time-travelling wrist-watch you're trying to reconfigure with a screwdriver. It can be as simple or whacky as you like!

Whatever you choose, know that you can always return to this cafรฉ for a moment of peace and quiet. I sat here for a while with my Hobbit friend @chronicles.of.a.bookworm and we did some writing.

P.S. Can you spot the random Christopher Walken poster that was in this quiet Kansas cafรฉ?๐Ÿคฃ
  • What if it was all just fun again?
Childhood returning like sunshine
To dust off your wings
And remind you how it felt to fly

Last week on the retreat in Yorkshire, we made flower crowns and did a photoshoot wearing them, along with these gorgeous wings by @auburnandpeaches. As soon as we put them on, I noticed how we all began to dance and twirl across the grass, wings and hair ruffled by the breeze in the sunshine. It was pure joy๐Ÿ˜‚

I love the fact that we were able to dress up as fairies (under the guise of a photoshoot of course๐Ÿ˜Œ) - it felt like being transported to a world where we could just play in our imagination again.

[This wasn't intended as an ad, BUT Elle handmakes these wings for adults, so if you want to be a fairy too, see @auburnandpeaches' page!๐Ÿงšโ€โ™€๏ธ]

โ€ข

Feeling joyful is different from feeling peaceful (although this was both simultaneously). We often have moments of peace, because it can come along with relief, or even tiredness, suggesting an absence of chaos - but in terms of fulfilling, whole-hearted, childlike JOY...

Do you have a memory from childhood where you felt utterly free and joyful?

When was the most recent time you felt utterly free and joyful?

...and is there any similarity between the two?
