Hello Enchanted Folk! I've been squirreled away in Hello Enchanted Folk! I've been squirreled away in my creative attic working at some posts I'm very excited to share, but in the meantime here's a little *filler episode* of some autumn vibes🍂

Some autumnal highlights from this past week:

•Last Tuesday my Mum, sister and I went shopping for Halloween things (a little tradition we do every year now)🎃
•I made this pumpkin pie on Wednesday, while listening to the Once Upon A Time musical episode songs amidst the smell of cinnamon☕
•On Thursday, I stood in the rain beneath flashes of lightning and rumbles of thunder as I queued for Ben Barnes' first UK concert (which was amazing! I'll do another post about it)☔
•Yesterday, I read The Country Girls by Edna O'Brien for university while drinking cinder toffee coffee (say that 5 times fast...). I had my first seminar of 3rd year today and really enjoyed it.

How has your week been? If it's autumn for you too, is your house filled with decorations and pumpkin spices yet? What things have you been doing to embrace the season? 🎃🍂🥧
What makes you feel inspired, uplifted and thrille What makes you feel inspired, uplifted and thrilled?🌳

A few posts ago, I asked about daily comforts and what makes you feel cosy. Now I'm intrigued to know what you are passionate about; what fills you with a sense of adventure and wonder.

For me, it's the feeling of sudden inspiration when I think of an idea for an art piece, or a story. It's the vastness of the moors when I've wandered across the land where my favourite writers from the past once walked. It's the awe-inspiring beauty of a pink sky, or a full moon, when I glance out the window and realise it is there.

It's the sense of determination I get to improve my skills, to create something new, or to embark on adventures into unexplored territory.

As Anne Shirley would say, what gives you a thrill?✨
You're at a café, it's calm and quiet, and a cup You're at a café, it's calm and quiet, and a cup of your favourite drink is beside you☕

What else is on the table?

Perhaps it's a book to read, a notebook to write in, or a time-travelling wrist-watch you're trying to reconfigure with a screwdriver. It can be as simple or whacky as you like!

Whatever you choose, know that you can always return to this café for a moment of peace and quiet. I sat here for a while with my Hobbit friend @chronicles.of.a.bookworm and we did some writing.

P.S. Can you spot the random Christopher Walken poster that was in this quiet Kansas café?🤣
What if it was all just fun again? Childhood retur What if it was all just fun again?
Childhood returning like sunshine
To dust off your wings
And remind you how it felt to fly

Last week on the retreat in Yorkshire, we made flower crowns and did a photoshoot wearing them, along with these gorgeous wings by @auburnandpeaches. As soon as we put them on, I noticed how we all began to dance and twirl across the grass, wings and hair ruffled by the breeze in the sunshine. It was pure joy😂

I love the fact that we were able to dress up as fairies (under the guise of a photoshoot of course😌) - it felt like being transported to a world where we could just play in our imagination again.

[This wasn't intended as an ad, BUT Elle handmakes these wings for adults, so if you want to be a fairy too, see @auburnandpeaches' page!🧚‍♀️]

Feeling joyful is different from feeling peaceful (although this was both simultaneously). We often have moments of peace, because it can come along with relief, or even tiredness, suggesting an absence of chaos - but in terms of fulfilling, whole-hearted, childlike JOY...

Do you have a memory from childhood where you felt utterly free and joyful?

When was the most recent time you felt utterly free and joyful?

...and is there any similarity between the two?
I'm not sure how many of you know that I record au I'm not sure how many of you know that I record audiobooks, but here's how it started!

Three years ago today, my copy of Daughter of the Deep by Lina C. Amarego arrived through the door. I'd discovered Lina's profile soon after setting up this account, and it introduced me to the world of indie authors.

I was a fan right away, and messaged her as I read, enthralled by the story she'd written. At some point I sent a voice-message, and she asked if I'd want to do the audiobook!

"Um... I have no clue where to start," I said, "But I can give it a go."

Fast-forward to now, and her completed trilogy has its own shelf in my room. The first audiobook is out on audible, and I'm currently doing final checks on the second one, which will be out this month!

So thank you Lina, for creating this world and sharing it with us, and for the grace you've shown me as I learn the ropes of this audio thing. Can you believe your first book baby is 3 years old?!

⚓

1 - Me with the Daughter of the Deep hardback copy (the sequel, Sister of the Stars, is behind)

2 - The first page of Daughter of the Deep, which I can recite by heart😂

3 - Listen to a trailer for book 1 - the first audiobook I did!

4 - My Keira outfit (excuse the sloppy Photoshop attempt)

5 - Listen to an abridged excerpt from book 2, out this month!

Tell me what brings comfort to your day☕ What ma Tell me what brings comfort to your day☕ What makes you feel cosy and peaceful?

My friend Lou @the__sick__rose inspired this question, with her post asking about people's comfort songs, to make a playlist of them.

So I thought it might be fun if I make a moodboard of what we find comfort in day-to-day. It could be something you do, something you imagine... anything that makes you feel cosy. Comment yours and I'll add it to the board🤗

For me, it's seeing the familiar trees outside my window, hearing the chatter of my family in the house, the feeling of opening a book to read or a notebook to write in, the smell of freshly-cooked dinner filling the kitchen, and drinking a cup of hot chocolate in the evening.🌳

What are your daily comforts?📚
Would you rather read a book purely for adventurou Would you rather read a book purely for adventurous escapism, or to make you think?

I like a blend of both, perhaps leaning towards the latter, and I've been trying to strike a balance between them while writing my book.
I want the mystery to pull the reader through the plot: Who is the magician? What is he up to? Where will they go next?

Then I also want the narrative to take the reader through their own mind, showing it new angles and reflections: What is a human? Are you the same 'you' as yesterday? What happens when we're not here anymore?

Which question intrigues you most?📚
After seeing the Barbie movie, some young boys hur After seeing the Barbie movie, some young boys hurried up to us - they'd just watched it too. One hesitantly asked, as if star-struck, "Are you Barbie?"
I said 'sure', and they asked if I'd pose with them for photos, so I did.

I loved the Barbie movies growing up, and they'd always end with a quote - the first, The Nutcracker, had 'Anything is possible.' (see the slides for the others)

[My spoiler-free thoughts:]

Throughout the movie, I was trying to decide what I thought of it. Moments of emotional depth made me feel comforted and seen. Watching the Dreamhouse world I used to play in come to life was magical - but I was also surprised to hear pointed political monologues in a movie I thought would be a fun quest... By the end though, I had a lump in my throat from the warm feeling it left me with.

Now knowing what the movie is, I've been thinking about it often over the past couple of days. Sure, there are some aspects I thought they took too far, or where they undermined their own point... but I grew up with Barbie, and thanks to this movie it feels like she's now grown up with me.

As those young boys walked away, they excitedly discussed how much they loved the movie. I saw a burly man in a pink shirt leaving after us, some families, young girls and middle-aged women. They were all smiling.

Regardless of opinions about this movie's boldness, it captured what Barbie has always been for me: inspiration that we can live a life we dream of, that there is magic in the world despite its flaws and darkness, and that we can handle it if we just believe in ourselves.

Corny for some? Sure, but they're just missing out on the fun.

Have you seen the Barbie movie yet? Did you grow up with the original movies and the dolls too?💖
So someone thought we were doing a ritual today💁‍♀️

For this photoshoot we took some vintage-style props outside on a table, to take some vaguely witchy photos - and it occurred to us that candles, a chalice, potion bottles, our outfits... might be interpreted as something occult, especially out here in the midwest😅 So when a neighbour of Alysha's appeared and stood watching us, we wondered what she might say.

She looked over the props table for a while, then proceeded to explain what each item is for: candle for fire, chalice for water, mirror for scrying, etc. Then she said 'careful though, it's high noon - don't summon anything you can't undo', and left😆

So I mean, we were just using some vintage things as props for a fun photo session - yet she assumed we were doing some ritual😂 Strange how what is imaginary for you is real for someone else.

People will always misconstrue. Keep doing your thing; you know what's true for you.

Any funny stories of where things have been misinterpreted - during photoshoots, or otherwise?
Hesitating at the crossroads, where will you go ne Hesitating at the crossroads, where will you go next?

In my book, my character Zoe is working at the bookshop in the village where she grew up, and it's always been a comfort to her... but it has become run-down, it hardly gets customers anymore, and her best friend has been away for three months. What happens when a comfort place becomes stagnant, the people who made it special move on, and its magic dwindles?

Can we hold the magic of the past ourselves, in our memory - or do we have to move on to something new to feel it in the present? Is it both?

These are some of the questions Zoe navigates through the book. What will she decide - to stay in the past, or move forward?

What would you do?

It's fascinating how fairytale creatures vary depending on the folklore's origin. I grew up with simplified and Disneyfied versions of Grimm's fairytales, but also loved the folklore in the Spiderwick books (which I reread last week in preparation for my drama exam), with sprites hiding in flowers, and invisible goblins in the woods.

I also loved Terry Pratchett's Discworld folklore in the Tiffany Aching books, which feature tiny blue indestructible Scottish men called Pictsies who drink turpentine and steal sheep😂

What are the versions of folklore you know best? I'd love to know about them!🍄
Alysha (@chronicles.of.a.bookworm) was one of the Alysha (@chronicles.of.a.bookworm) was one of the first people I connected with on this platform 3 years ago, as we chatted about our favourite books, shows, and our own books we'd just started writing! Her photos cosy and artistic, she shared videos of making different flavour coffees, and I said how I wished I could try them!

In the time since, over video-calls, we've worked on our books, made hot chocolate, baked cookies, and started a collaborative writing project.

Now, 3 years on, I've crossed the pond to visit Alysha in person in America! It's funny how it feels like I've been here so many times before, because her apartment is so cosy and familiar. I got to finally try one of her coffees (almond flavour 😍) and meet her dog Piper, as well as her 2 new kittens, Hiccup and Nori. They are asleep on my lap currently😂

Yesterday, we watched some Good Omens, played 'It Takes Two' (defeating a bomb-throwing vacuum cleaner), and I went to ✨WalMART✨ which was very exciting.

I'd never been further from England than Paris before, so this is quite an adventure! I hope to share more highlights over the next three weeks.

Here's to soul-friends whom we would cross oceans to see💕🍄🌿
