Elirenore Newsletter 1
Greetings, bold traveller! This message from The Enchanted Society is for newly-appointed Elirenores, and any who wish to hear of its news!
Where we left off, you were walking with Kurika (the Choosing Unicorn) around the central courtyard, with tall trees lining the path on both sides. Let’s see what happens next…
At the end of the path is a chocolate-brown door, set into a wall of beige stone. As you approach, you can see an emblem painted on it: a crest of some kind.
You dare to peer closer, as Kurika slows her pace beside you. In the centre of the emblem’s brown background, there is a stack of 3 books. Below that are the words: ‘Books through all the ages hold my heart betwixt the pages.’ Reading them sends a warm shiver along your arms.
“Here.” A silvery voice whispers in your mind, and you turn to see Kurika with an envelope between her copper teeth. Wondering how it had appeared, you carefully take it from her.
Opening it, you find a letter, written in neat handwriting.
Welcome, my fellow reader! My name is Oleana Corwyn, and I’m the Reading Keeper here at Elirenore.
I’d like to share with you a poem that wonderfully encapsulates what it means to be a book-lover – and one that, no doubt, will resonate with you.
Notes on the Art of Poetry
By Dylan Thomas
“I could never have dreamt that there were such goings-on
in the world between the covers of books,
such sandstorms and ice blasts of words,
such staggering peace, such enormous laughter,
such and so many blinding bright lights,
splashing all over the pages
in a million bits and pieces
all of which were words, words, words,
and each of which were alive forever
in its own delight and glory and oddity and light.”
I am most excited to meet you!
See you very soon.
Turning the page over, you see some more handwriting – but this time, it’s bold and messy.
Hiya there, friend! So, you’re here for a tour of Elirenore? Excellent. I’m Raghnall Ryder, you can call me Ryder, and I’m the Imagination Keeper here. Can’t wait to see your face when you first spot one of the dragons.
Cheers and see ya soon!
(Read on for part 1 of the Elirenore tour…)
You fold the letter and put it back in the envelope, before putting it carefully into your pocket. Did he really mean dragons? A sudden ‘click!’ interrupts that thought, and the brown door begins to open.
“Hi there! Have you come to see Elirenore? I’m Oleana.” a tall woman with a beaming smile emerges from behind the door. Her tightly-curled black hair bounces with energy as she steps forward, her arm extended towards yours. Shaking your hand warmly, she says “Did you like the poem?”
“Oh, I did!” You nod enthusiastically.
After letting go of your hand, she bows her head to Kurika, then beckons you inside. Leaving the Unicorn behind, you venture through the arch in the wall, into…
A courtyard, bustling with people! Just in front of you is a large Tudor-style building, its cream walls lined with dark brown beams that frame diamond leaded windows.
“Very Shakespeare, isn’t it?” Oleana laughs, before placing a hand on your shoulder. “These are your fellow Society members! They’re all very friendly.” With another kind smile, she walks away to resume her position at the door.
You turn your attention to the people around you. Some are chatting excitedly, while others look a little nervous, but their faces light up as they see you.
“Are you coming on the tour?” one girl asks, and you nod excitedly. “Apparently we’re just waiting for the other Keeper, and then we get to see inside!”
As if on cue, the front door of the building opens, and a man jogs through it. Ah yes, so this is Ryder. You observe his leather tunic and the brown hair matted across his brow. “Heya guys! Sorry Oli, the dragons needed calming down – I think they’re restless with excitement!”
“Well, I think this lot are, too!” Oleana chuckles.
With a clap of his hands, Ryder leans forward, eyeing the small crowd with his eyebrows raised. “Right then, folks!” His eyes sparkle, as if seeing an adventure about to begin. “Who’s ready to enter Elirenore?”
